[...] An ill-starred taxi ride recently left me without a commuter bike. Lesson learned: When taking a taxi, always get a receipt. Without one, the Bashi taxi company proved unable to recover my beloved Dahon Boardwalk, folded and placed in the trunk. It had recently been converted into what I dare say was China’s only fixed-gear folding bike. [...]

Andrew, I used to live in the area that you lived, and probably we went to the same school. It was exciting and long ride on the bike though.

Thanks, Matt! Glad you enjoyed it. I don't have my current Shanghai commute posted (frankly, it's too short and I don't think it's very exciting), but you can see a slightly more recent commute at:

The Olympic stadium is a bit of a hike from the Lama Temple (it's right at the centre of the North 4th Ring Road), but it's quite doable -- about 10km or so would be my guess. Beijing is actually very easy to navigate, since so much of it is a perfect grid. Hope you have a great trip!

Terrific photo essay. I hope you do another one for your new commute. I'll be in Beijing in a couple of weeks and want to rent a bike and go from our hotel near the Lama Temple to the Olympic Center and Bei hai park. Looking forward to getting lost along the way.

[...] A few months ago, I posted pictures of my Beijing commute from home to my language school. Since then, I have moved from my old apartment in Beijing’s northwestern university area to an apartment within the city’s Second Ring Road. The Second Ring traces the line once drawn by the imperial moat and city walls, so I am now living in “Old Beijing” — you can find my alley (or hutong) on Qing dynasty maps from the 18th century. In addition to a new flat, I also have a new commute destination in the city’s Central Business District (CBD) on the East Third Ring. I am blessed with perhaps one of the city’s most pleasant commutes, as it takes me along the old imperial lakes (Shichahai/Houhai), around the back of Jingshan Park to the northern end of the Forbidden City, and then east-southeast past Chaoyangmen to the Third Ring.
Hi, Max,
It's not as crowded as, say, Hong Kong, because there's a lot more space -- but it can get pretty crowded at times. Parts of it are very modern, but it's very rural just a few kilometres North or West from where these pictures were taken. Thanks for visiting!
